Safeguarding for Housing and Support Staff

A basic introductory course that aims to improve awareness of Safeguarding in housing and support services specifically and to understand housing’s role in Safeguarding under the Care Act 2014. The course can be easily flexed to focus on either child or adult safeguarding and can be delivered at different levels for different roles depending on the needs of the organisation. We will ensure examples are relevant to day-to-day working experiences and that reporting advice can be easily practically applied. We will cover legislation, awareness, and how and when to report concerns. We will ensure that staff understand how vital their role can be in safeguarding adults at risk and children.

A tailored course for Sheltered/ Extra Care housing and for young people’s services is also available.

Course contains

  • Legislation – what it means in practice for housing/ support workers
  • Awareness of different types of abuse, neglect and exploitation
  • Signs that someone may be being abused in context
  • Stalking, domestic violence, FGM. HBV and high risks
  • Who does what? – how housing/ support fit with other professionals working to promote better safeguarding
  • How housing/support services are part of a wider safeguarding partnership
  • Sharing information effectively and with safeguarding in focus
  • Reporting: how, when and what happens next – what are the points of intervention in someone’s life.

Courses for Sheltered Housing/ Extra Care staff will also cover Mental Capacity, the risks from financial abuse and distraction crime/fraud and will focus on the needs of older adults.

Courses for Young People’s services will specifically cover the transition from child to adult and how that affects safeguarding and will focus on the specific risks of exploitation, abuse and neglect faced more commonly by young people including online abuse.

Learning outcomes

After this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate good awareness of types and signs of abuse, neglect and exploitation
  • Be aware of some specific general safeguarding matters, including FGM, domestic abuse, forced marriage, stalking etc.
  • Understand the legislation around safeguarding interventions and how housing fits
  • Be confident about how to work in partnership with other agencies and effectively share information in order to minimise risk and promote effective safeguarding
  • Better understand who does what and how other professionals work with you
  • Be confident reporting your concerns and better understand what may happen next.

Suitable for

All types of housing and support workers including those operating at strategic and management levels. The course is highly recommended for housing providers who have not yet developed their response to the Care Act 2014 and are looking to develop policy towards a practical, proportionate, workable and effective safeguarding response.

Meet the trainers

Tracy Keane is highly qualified in the field of social care with extensive experience of management in early years, youth justice, children’s homes, crisis counselling, disability services and managing staff and teams of volunteers within the statutory, charitable and private sectors. Alongside her working life, Tracy has been a short term and respite foster carer for hard to place children and young people for many years. Tracy has set up new social care projects for different local authorities and charities and managed the funding for these to ensure their success including appropriate adult services, mentoring services and services to support young people and adults who go missing from home or care. In recent years Tracy has worked within the police service as an investigator on response teams, expanding her knowledge and experience in safeguarding and domestic violence and the criminal justice system in general. Tracy is now a freelance trainer and consultant, working with professionals in health and social care and enjoys sharing her knowledge and experience with other professionals.
