Learning outcomes
After attending this course, you will:
- Understand how the benefits system is structured and the eligibility rules for the benefits claimed by older people;
- Have gained an awareness of the principles behind means testing and how Pension Credit is worked out;
- Be able to help people make successful claims for disability benefits such as Attendance Allowance;
- Understand which benefits can/cannot be paid at the same time including how Carer’s Allowance overlaps with the Retirement Pension;
- Be able to complete basic benefit checks to ensure older people are claiming their likely entitlements;
- Be able to advise people on how to make claims and how to challenge decisions;
- Have access to advice regarding any course-related question for 12 months after the course (not available for in-house customers).
Suitable for
This course is relevant for anyone working with people aged approximately 65 and above. Participants need no previous knowledge of the benefits system.
Meet the trainer
David Stickland
David Stickland has been a Shelter trainer since 2003. He has extensive experience as a Citizens Advice and local authority benefits caseworker.
David now combines training with working in frontline advice. He is the lead trainer at The Benefits Training Co. and works as an adviser on a busy telephone advice service in London. He runs a large number of Shelter's Housing Benefit and Welfare Benefits courses.
Before becoming a benefits adviser, David worked abroad as an English language teacher where he developed an interactive training style that is engaging, informative and enjoyable.
