Challenging Housing Benefit Decisions

This one-day course focuses on the more complicated areas of Housing Benefit and how to challenge decisions effectively. A good working knowledge of Housing Benefit is assumed.

  • Non dependant deductions - typical decision making errors
  • Under occupancy - taking in a boarder/lodger and other options

  • Tackling overpayments
  • Challenging decisions - reviews, supersessions and appeals.

Learning outcomes

After attending this course, you will:

  • Be able to advise on the claims process including the evidence requirements
  • Understand the exempt accommodation rules
  • Be aware of typical errors made by Housing Benefit decision makers when assessing claims which include a non-dependant
  • Understand the most effective options for social landlord tenants affected by an under-occupancy reduction
  • Understand the temporary absence and two homes rules for Housing Benefit
  • Know when a Housing Benefit overpayment is non-recoverable
  • Be able to challenge decisions effectively using supersessions, revisions and Appeals.

Suitable for

Anyone who works with tenants of a council, housing association or private landlord. Delegates should have either attended introductory level training or have a good working knowledge of the housing benefit system.
