Maximising Income for Homelessness Officers

This course enables housing staff to maximise income for their tenants and will help Local Authorities meet the requirements of the Homelessness Reduction Act. It considers a range of vulnerable groups including people leaving prison and hospital, survivors of domestic abuse, care leavers, and those affected by a health condition or disability. The course looks at the whole benefits system but has a particular focus on housing related payments and getting the rent paid.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Be aware of the range of benefits that make up the benefits and tax credits system and who can claim them
  • Know when a tenant should claim housing related benefits through Universal Credit and when it should be Housing Benefit
  • Know when and how it is possible to fill gaps in the rent account by getting housing related benefits paid retrospectively
  • Be able to identify the correct package of benefits for their tenants and help with the claims process
  • Be able to identify increases in means tested benefits and tax credits following an award of a disability benefit
  • Be able to trouble-shoot problems that typically affect tenants

Meet the trainers

Roni Marsh

Roni Marsh has been a freelance trainer since March 2009. She has written training materials on different areas of debt and benefits including financial capability. Roni has delivered courses for a wide range of participants including foodbanks, Citizens Advice Bureaux, solicitors, law students and housing association staff. She is a MIMA Cert registered debt adviser and Debt Relief Order Intermediary, running a team of staff and volunteers advising in debt and benefits. She was shortlisted for Money Adviser of the Year at the Institute of Money Advisers (IMA) awards in 2017.

Danny Murphy

Danny has worked as a specialist benefit and money adviser for over 20 years, providing casework and tribunal representation whilst working with Advice Centres, Local Authorities, Citizens Advice Bureaux and Housing Associations. As well as managing his own caseload of clients, he currently manages a team of Financial Inclusion and Welfare Rights officers dealing with the challenges of welfare reform for a Housing Association. Danny has been writing and delivering training courses to support those working with clients facing benefit and debt problems since 2007. These have been for a variety of audiences including both beginners and experienced advisers.'
