Mental Health and Welfare Benefits

This course will provide workers who support or assess mental health service users with a robust, up to date knowledge of the benefits system. Delegates will become confident about the information and advice they give.

  • Employment & Support Allowance (ESA) - a guide through the claiming process, assessments, scoring, medicals, exemptions; how to prepare effectively; how to challenge negative decisions
  • The changing regime – supporting clients through the demands of Jobcentre Plus and an era of growing conditionality

    - rules, earnings, permitted work, making the most of the system and preparing for full time work
    - overview of tax credits and how people with mental health problems can make the most of their work decisions
  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Attendance Allowance:
    - tactics for successful claims 
    - arguing for people with fluctuating or chaotic conditions
    - using your professional status effectively
    - what supervision really means in a mental health context
  • The means test maze: how incapacity benefit, DLA, income support and housing benefit interrelate, plus the effect of capital and income
  • Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment: what you can expect and the likely impact on mental health clients 
    - timetable for change
    - winners and losers and how to make the best long-term decisions.
